Children often put things in their mouths. This can be very dangerous as a child can choke if the item blocks the small airway or the child could be poisoned. Ingestion is when a foreign body is swallowed and goes into the gullet or stomach. Sometimes an item ingested will pass through the child's digestive system. Other times the item will need to be removed surgically.

Button batteries
Ingestion of small button batteries by children can be particularly dangerous. Button batteries are particularly hazardous if they leak when ingested as they contain acid.
  • Button batteries are used in some toys, watches, hearing aids and other digital items.
  • If you suspect that a child has ingested a button battery, contact the Poisons Information Centre immediately.
  • Store button batteries out of the reach of children.
  • Ensure that children are unable to open the battery casing of items containing button batteries.

Safety Awareness Tip
Nurseries
Whether equipment is purchased new or you receive someone's pre-loved things, consider how safe they will be for children. When buying equipment look for smooth, rounded edges, splinter-free timber and rounded bracing bars. Beware of folding items which can be dangerous if they collapse and fingers can become jammed in the folding mechanism. Strength and stability are also important factors.
