Safety Tips

Holidays are a time for having fun, but out of the familiar home environment, things can and do go wrong. By being aware of safety and planning, holidays can be safe and happy.

Car restraint laws overseas
Australia is often envied for its comprehensive regulations for car restraints. In Australia it is mandatory to have a 'five point harness' system for child car restraints. Different countries have varying laws in respect to car restraints.

In some countries car restraints are fitted in the front seat of vehicles. The reduction in transport injuries in Australia shows that car restraints should be used at all times.

Enquire about car restraint laws in the countries through which you plan to travel.
It is a good idea to take your car restraint with you when travelling.

Air travel
Travelling in aeroplanes with children can be challenging. Plan the trip to ensure that the journey is comfortable and enjoyable for everybody.

  • Take new toys and activities that the children haven't seen before.
  • Remember that children have shorter attention spans than do adults. Plan several smaller activities and order special children's meals.
  • Take your car restraint with you to use in relative's cars, taxis and hire cars.
  • Be aware of changes in pressure when ascending and descending. Feed young children at these times and offer older children something to suck.
  • Have a damp cloth with you as children enjoy feeling 'fresh' as well.

Mosquitoes
Mosquito bites are common amongst young children. Although children are often unaware of the problem, it is important to take precautions.
  • When children are playing apply insect repellent which is safe and recommended for children.
  • Dress children in protective clothing such as long sleeved tops and long pants.
  • Discourage children from playing outdoors in the evening when mosquitoes are prevalent.
  • If travelling to a country where malaria is endemic, ask your doctor for advice.
